3 examples to show how MNS became a vote cutter.
In its first election 13 seats in 2009 elections. In 2014, MNS could win only 1 seat and its vote share dropped to 3.2 %. Again in 2019, the dismal performance continued and the party again managed to win just 1 seat but the vote percentage dropped to 2.3 %.
This time the party failed to register even a single win. But the data suggests that while MNS could not win any seat for itself, but it has inadvertently helped cousin Uddhav's Sena to win some seats in a tightly fought contest.

[ad_1] GG News Bureau New Delhi, 23rd Dec. Veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has sparked fresh discussions on the leadership of the INDIA Opposition bloc, suggesting that the Congress should be open to not leading the alliance. In an interview with The Indian Express, Aiyar stated, “Let whoever wants to be the leader be the leader. There is competence in Mamata Banerjee… There is competence in others in the alliance.” Aiyar, who recently released the second volume of his autobiography A Maverick in Politics, emphasized that the Congress’s position would remain significant within the alliance, regardless of formal leadership. “I am sure Rahul [Gandhi] will be treated with even more respect than he would be as the president of the alliance,” the 83-year-old leader remarked. Leadership Tussle Within the INDIA Bloc Aiyar’s comments come amidst a brewing tussle over who should lead the INDIA bloc, formed to counter the BJP’s electoral dominance. While the Congress doubled its Lok Sabha tally in the recent elections, it has faced setbacks in state polls in Haryana and Maharashtra, leading to questions about its ability to anchor the alliance. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has emerged as a strong contender for leadership within the bloc. Banerjee recently stated, “If given the opportunity, I would ensure its smooth functioning. I don’t want to go outside Bengal, but I can run it from here.” Support Gathers for Mamata Banerjee Several veteran Opposition leaders have thrown their weight behind Banerjee. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) founder Lalu Prasad Yadav said, “Mamata Banerjee should be given the leadership of the INDIA Bloc. Congress’s objection means nothing.” Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar echoed this sentiment, calling Banerjee a “prominent leader” capable of steering the alliance. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut also expressed support, saying, “Whether it is Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, or Shiv Sena, we are all together. Mamata ji should be a major partner in the INDIA alliance.” Challenges and BJP’s Criticism The leadership question highlights the complexities of the INDIA bloc, especially in regions where alliance partners compete against each other electorally. The BJP has dismissed the bloc as “opportunistic,” with leaders questioning its long-term viability. While the Congress’s willingness to take a backseat could foster unity, it also risks diminishing the party’s centrality in the Opposition landscape. With the 2029 general elections looming, the INDIA bloc faces the dual challenge of resolving internal differences and presenting a united front against the BJP’s formidable election machinery. As the debate continues, the INDIA alliance must navigate its leadership dynamics while maintaining focus on its shared goal of defeating the BJP. Opposition INDIA Bloc Submits No-Confidence Motion Against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar
In a significant political development, members of the opposition alliance, INDIA bloc, have moved a no-confidence motion against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced this move on Tuesday, citing concerns over the alleged partisan conduct of the Chairman during the proceedings of the council of states.
A Step to Safeguard Institutional Integrity
The motion, submitted collectively by various parties within the INDIA bloc, is described as a step to protect the institution of the Rajya Sabha rather than targeting an individual. Speaking on the matter, an opposition leader emphasized that this was not a personal protest but a bid to uphold the sanctity and impartiality of the institution.
“We aim to send a clear message that the concerns raised by the opposition are about preserving the integrity of the institution, not about any specific individual,” stated the leader, who preferred to remain anonymous.
Allegations of Partisan Conduct
According to Jairam Ramesh, the decision to file the motion was driven by Dhankhar’s handling of parliamentary proceedings, which the opposition alleges has been biased. “All parties in the INDIA group had no alternative but to formally submit this motion, given the partisan manner in which the Hon’ble Chairman has conducted the council's business,” Ramesh posted on social media platform X.
Another leader highlighted the Chairman’s decisions to disallow opposition members from raising critical issues as a recurring concern. This perceived lack of fair representation in parliamentary debates has spurred the bloc to act.
Who Signed the Motion?
Several prominent leaders from opposition parties have signed the no-confidence motion. These include Nadimul Haque and Sagarika Ghosh from the Trinamool Congress, Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena (UBT).
Interestingly, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which has seven MPs in the Rajya Sabha, has not yet decided its stance on the motion. Speaking to reporters, BJD chief Naveen Patnaik stated, “We are still examining the motion. A decision will be taken based on what we consider necessary.” Notably, the BJD supported Dhankhar’s candidature during the Vice Presidential elections in 2022.
Political Ramifications
The submission of the no-confidence motion underscores the growing friction between the opposition and the ruling establishment. While it remains uncertain how the motion will proceed, it has spotlighted the INDIA bloc’s attempts to consolidate its stance against perceived governmental overreach and lack of impartiality within parliamentary proceedings.
This action also highlights the evolving dynamics within opposition politics, as parties strive to address broader institutional concerns while navigating individual alliances and agendas.
The Road Ahead
As the political landscape heats up, this no-confidence motion has sparked discussions about institutional accountability and the role of opposition in ensuring checks and balances in governance. While the outcome of the motion remains to be seen, the INDIA bloc’s move has drawn attention to the underlying tensions in the functioning of India's parliamentary democracy.

Maharashtra’s Wait for a Chief Minister: Sanjay Raut Reveals the Delay’s Cause
Sanjay Raut, a leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), has pointed to the “unnatural mandate” received by Mahayuti in the elections as the reason for the delay in appointing Maharashtra’s Chief Minister. Despite eight days passing since the results, the state still awaits its new CM. Raut alleged that internal conflicts within Mahayuti are behind the delay, prompting acting Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to visit his village instead of attending key meetings on government formation.
Meeting postponed due to Shinde?
The suspense over Maharashtra’s new Chief Minister continues as acting CM Eknath Shinde visited his native village in Satara. An important meeting in Mumbai to decide the government’s formation was postponed. Rumors suggested that Shinde was upset with the ongoing decisions, but his party leader Uday Samant clarified that Shinde was unwell, not angry. Maharashtra Unfiltered: Raw Politics, Daily Delivered – 19 November 2024
Maharashtra’s politics are full of excitement right now as the state gets ready for the 2024 Assembly elections, which are set for November 20. This election is very important, and there will be a tough race between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, and their partners, the Shiv Sena groups and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). This election is a big deal in Maharashtra’s political history[2, 3] because over 4,140 candidates are running in 288 districts.
Important Politicians and Parties
There are important people on both sides of the election:
The BJP is led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who has made his group in the Shiv Sena a key partner. Shinde’s government has put a lot of effort into building up facilities and progress[4].
Congress: Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are in charge of this party, which wants to regain ground in Maharashtra.
Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT): Thackeray is running on a platform of social justice and regional pride. He wants to get his party’s power back after it broke up with Shinde.
Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction: Ajit Pawar, who is now deputy chief minister, is also a major candidate. He leads a group that has traditionally had a lot of power in Maharashtra politics[3].
Important Changes
As of today, November 19, 2024, politics are very heated, with people running for office at the last minute and making last-minute plans. The opposition coalition, called the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), is trying to take power away from the Mahayuti alliance, which is run by the BJP. Both groups have gotten national leaders to help their campaigns, so the stakes are high. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have been working hard to get people all over the state to back the cause[5].

Important Groups to Keep an Eye on
Several groups are being closely watched as possible predictors of the overall election outcome:
1. Worli: A big election with Aaditya Thackeray (Shiv Sena-UBT) running against Milind Deora (Shinde group) and Sandeep Deshpande (MNS).
Baramati is a traditional base for the Pawar family. In this fight, Ajit Pawar is up against Yugendra Pawar, who is backed by Sharad Pawar.
3. Kopri-Pachpakhadi is Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s district, where he is running against Kedar Dighe. This election has personal stakes for both of them [3, 4].
How Elections Work
The upcoming elections aren’t just about parties; they also show problems in society as a whole. There are now over 96 million registered voters, including almost 2 million people who are voting for the first time. This change in the population could affect how people vote, especially younger voters who are becoming more worried about things like unemployment and the economy[2].
Also, claims of election fraud have come to light, including claims that cash was given to voters to change how they voted. Law enforcement agencies across Maharashtra have seized large amounts of cash and illegal gifts, which raises worries about the fairness of the election process[5].
What this means for Maharashtra
The results of these elections will have long-lasting effects on how Maharashtra is run and what policies are made. A win for the coalition led by the BJP could strengthen its grip on power and allow it to keep working on its growth plans. If, on the other hand, the MVA is able to take back control, it could mean a move toward more progressive policies that focus on social justice and regional growth.
All eyes will be on Maharashtra tomorrow, November 20, as people get ready to go to the polls for what looks like it will be one of the most important elections in recent memory. The findings will be made public on November 23. They will not only decide how local governments will work in the future, but they will also set the stage for national political alignments before the next general elections[2, 3].
